To become a falconer is not easy
An apprentice falconer must have incredible persaveerance and be prepared for big dissapointments.
As from 2002 the new Dutch flora en fauna legislation applies in the Netherlands.
Hierin is stated that to be ellegable for the falconer diploma, you must spend a minimal of 2 years with a mentor that is member of a 'recognized' falconry association.
You must also follow a theoretical course.
More falconry and hunting legislation information can be found at Ministry of LNV (Dutch).
Search for the pages 'jachtbesluit' where the demands and requirements are stated to be ellegable for a falconry diploma.
Falconry hunting in the Netherlands is very difficult due to current legislation.
There is a hint that there may be some changes and it may become simpler due to the influence of the EU regulations, but little can be said about when this will happen and to what extent.
There is one other possibility, namely training the falcon exclusively on the lure, that is allowed in the Netherlands.
How do you start? Begin by getting falconry information from the Internet, purchase books on birds of prey and falconry. Attend a falconry workshop for beginners. Visit a falconer, falconry centre or birds of prey park and talk to them about their experiences and ask them for advice.
